Need to Treat Both Mom and Baby if it is Yeast/Thrush, boil all parts, milk is safe. Do not use oral liquid for baby's mouth on nipples.
Over-the-counter follow this recipe to formulate a non-prescription all purpose nipple ointment.
All Purpose Nipple Ointment:
Mix equal parts of:
• 1% Hydrocortisone Ointment (if pain/burning)
• Bacitracin Ointment (or Polysporin)
• Miconazole cream (May use Lotrimin or Lotrimin Ultra instead) (if you are told there is a concern for yeast or thrush) Apply the ointment sparingly to nipples after feedings for 7-14 days. If your nipple damage worsens or does not improve within 14 days, contact your Provider or Lactation. Want to absorb into skin. Safe for baby, but may wipe off any residue if going to nurse.
