Favorite Breastfeeding Links:
Some of our favorite links to breastfeeding information include:
MOM ISSUES:
Low Milk Supply: https://kellymom.com/hot-topics/low-supply/
(normal milk supply: around 1oz/hr, after 3 hours you would get around 3oz total both breasts by 2 weeks postpartum)
*Remember it does not have to be all or nothing. Even 5ml of breastmilk a day gives over 3 million antibodies and some protection against SIDS. (You can mix breastmilk in with the formula if needed)
Breast Pain: Engorgement (swollen) & Clogged Ducts
Engorgement: hardness, full uncomfortable breasts: You want to decrease swelling: Cold compresses, ibuprofen, laying flat on back. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/breast-engorgement
Clogged Ducts: hard spots or pain in one part of your breast. Treated similar to engorgement. Many moms take Sunflower Lecithin to help prevent and treat clogged ducts. https://www.babycenter.com/baby/breastfeeding/clogged-milk-ducts_8494
Mastitis: pain in breast, red streaking, fever, chills, feeling yucky, clogged duct/engorgement. Mastitis: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention (CALL OB or go to Walk-In Clinic for treatment)
Vasospasm/Raynaud's of the Nipple:
shooting breast/nipple pain that occurs after nursing/pumping, normally have color change to nipple (white/blanched and/or darker red/purple returning to normal color) heat makes it feel better (covering nipples right away).

Thrush/Yeast on the Nipples: sudden burning pain in nipples, can't stand anything touching nipples, might have redness on and around nipple, shiny flakey skin, or no symptoms but nipple pain not normally there. https://nestcollaborative.com/blog/thrush-and-breastfeeding/ and
https://ibconline.ca/information-sheets/candida-protocol/
Need to Treat Both Mom and Baby if it is Yeast/Thrush, boil all parts, milk is safe. Do not use oral liquid for baby's mouth on nipples.
All Purpose Nipple Ointment: (or see OBGYN Provider)
Mix equal parts of:
• 1% Hydrocortisone Ointment (if pain/burning)
• Polysporin
• Miconazole cream (May use Lotrimin or Lotrimin Ultra instead) (if you are told there is a concern for yeast or thrush) Apply the ointment sparingly to nipples after feedings for 7-14 days. If your nipple damage worsens or does not improve, contact your OBGYN/Mother's Family Provider and Lactation. (You want ointment to absorb into the skin. Safe for the baby, but you may wipe off any residue if going to nurse.)
